1999
In 1999 my Dad and I began searching for a muscle car. Being that I've been married and out of the house for 8 years now, I think we were both searching for something to get into together. Get a little "man time" in our lives. At that time all options were open. We were both particular to Chevrolet, but that didn't stop us from looking at a few GTO's, 442's and yes I'll admitt it... Stangs.
One winter day we took a trip to Mershon's in Springfield Ohio to look around and check out a few things on the lot. There were three cars that we were really interested in checking out; A 70 ( I think ) Buick GS 455 Stage One, a 70 Mach 1 Mustang and a another one I can't even remember. Well we got there and looked over the GS, which I really liked. We drove it, then the Mustang and looked at several cars that were way out of our price The owner then said, " we just got a pretty nice Chevelle in on trade, it's out back if you want to see it". We went to the back lot and there she was. We looked at it, looked at each other, looked back at the car, back at each other and smiled. A 454SS, (later found out the block was not original), the test drive really didn't matter but helped seal the deal. I think if it would have ran at all that's all it would have taken.
Well she was home with us by the next weekend. The whole time we had spent looking for a muscle car it was understood that whatever we bought was going to be a mean street ride, if it wasn't to begin with, I would build it to be.
It wasn't too long before we were advertising that 454 for sale. After the motor was sold we took a road trip to Niles Ohio and bought a ZZ502 from Jim Pace GMPP warehouse.
Over the cold months the motor was dropped in, and the rest of the mechanics gone over in my garage to the humm of a space heater.
What an enjoyment this ride has been since then.
Over the next year, as any 30 year old auto will do, little gremlins started rearing their ugly heads with poor brakes, bad wiring, some mismatched parts, and little "attention to detail" things we wish we had done. Well. That's when we decided to start Project 2002 and get things done the way we want.
It's now waiting for the last few pieces of that project and we are very very happy with what we have done and are just waiting for warmer weather.
I'd like to thank everyone at Team Chevelle for their help and guidance through all my projects. There is no better place and no better people on the net in my opinion.
I'd also like to give special thanks to one of my best friends, Rich Holstien for his professional skills and help with this project. Rich did much of the wrenching while I handed tools. Thanks to his wife Rebecca for letting him stay in my garage for so long.
